Selinunte, one of the oldest greek colony and
the most important city before the punique wars was founded around
the sixteen century b.C. , by a group of Megara Hyblea colonians,
destroyed around the 409 b.C. by a heartquake. This was the end of
one of the biggest greek colony from the west side. Its fallen
columns and dismantled tours, proud of the doric temples, Selinunte
shows to fascinated visitors its great past. It is evident "Lu fusu
di la vecchia", so called by the hand workers and by the fisherman
of the place, with its perfect architectonics propotions. It is an
impressive column, sixteen meters tall with a circumference of ten
meters: It is impressive and to understand how great it is; it is
necessary to t ouch it with your hands and look at it from the base.
Selinunte is an archeological park with colossal temples refined on
place. The sand stones from which the columns were refined came from
a place called " cave di Cusa" about therteen
chilometers from it. Even today we can notice the various phases of
the work for the columns extration which had to be transferred and
located from Cusa to Selinunte. Its climate and its sky
are always clear blue, making everything splendid around its place
in which is Spring and Summer time all year around. People thought
it was Zeus home and it was called mediterraneum pearl.

Selinunte's name comes
from a plant which grows spontaneausly near the river: wild celery
called "Sèlinon" from the
greek. |
